History

Thoreb has a proud history that started in 1976, when the founder of the Thoreb Group, Dr. Thore Brynielsson, wrote his thesis "Step by Step Development towards Attractive Public Transport”.

This thesis has been the foundation for all our product development.

AB Thoreb was founded in 1978. In the beginning the company's activities were primarily based on consulting. The income was used to develop markets and products that in the long run could realise the ideas in Dr. Brynielsson's thesis.

In 1987 Thoreb developed the first version of ELSY which is a distributed multiplexed electrical system. This was installed in a reconstructed Volvo B58. During the years, Thoreb has refined ELSY and its functionality and delivered the system to a number of coach builders all over the world. Constructors of other types of vehicles, such as trams, fire engines, forest harvesters and military vehicles have also used ELSY. Since the bus buyers' demands have increased during the years, Thoreb has developed a number of units that can be integrated in ELSY, such as a panel decoder unit that replaces a number of switches, etc. The nodes used in ELSY are continuously developed to meet new communication standards and for improved performance.

In 1989 the vehicle computer C90 was developed. The intention was that it should be the user interface for ELSY as well as being a part of a new product, LISY. During the years the C90 software and hardware has been further developed. Now it is possible to control almost any peripheral on a bus. The C90 vehicle computer is no longer produced, but was installed in more than 20 000 vehicles until 2006.

The first LISY project was started in 1990 in the Swedish city Östersund. They wanted an information system to enhance travelling on public transport, but also a tool for traffic planners to optimise the use of their bus fleet. Monitors were located at certain bus stops, where passengers could get real-time information about delayed buses.

After some years LISY developed into KomFram. However, we were not completely satisfied with the performance of the system and during 2002 our TRUE real-time system IT-radio was introduced into the market.

In 2005 the vehicle computer C90plus was introduced as a replacement for C90. With C90plus the user gets the C90 functionality, bus also improved performance, user interface and many features including driver guidance.

During the years Thoreb has developed products such as:

STEP, a step that made it easier for passengers to board and get off buses, trams, etc.

HYBRID buses, powered by batteries and a petrol motor. By using a sophisticated control unit, the generated surplus power charged the batteries when needed. The driver decided when to use batteries and when to use the motor.

SKJUTS, a planning tool for school transport. The product was developed as early as 1978 and has been very successful over the years. This is due to the close co-operation with our customers during all development. The first customer to buy SKJUTS is still a customer. SkJUTS has now been developed to SKJUTS+, which can be integrated with the traffic planning tool REBUS.

DV12, a powerful traveller information unit used inside buses with a display and an integrated amplifier and loudspeaker. Based on the DV12, is the DV15 which was developed for exterior use at bus shelters.

In 1994 the Swedish Minister of Trade and Industry awarded Thoreb as the growth company of the year.

Thoreb was ISO 9001 certified during 2002 and ISO 14001 certified during 2006.

Dr Thore Brynielsson was awarded the InformNorden IT Award during 2003 for his work with "making the public transport services more attractive by providing better information to the users".

Since autumn 2006 and 2007 Thoreb has been rated as a Triple A Company, which is the highest creditworthiness rating in Sweden.

Our two systems ELSY and IT-radio are extensively integrated with each other to provide our customers with the best and most complete real-time systems on the market.
